Newbies Search Here!

Ok, with past discussions and new people coming on here asking the same questions over and over again, things are starting to get out of hand, ive already been asked many the times about registering your PSP on yourpsp.com

So, im going to do this

This applies mainly toward UK residents, but some can appeal to you others

Make sure you read through this before you ask a question!

Here goes:

---

What Is A PSP?

Its the new portable gaming device by Sony, taking the world by storm.

---

What Is A Forum?

Its a place where people come to post messages about anything, this one specialises in the Sony PSP

---

Where Can I Buy My PSP?

You Can Buy PSP From Many Different Cities Its Now Available Almost everywhere I Got My PSP From Carrefour In Dubai. You Can Even Buy It From Ebay.
---

Which Version Should I Get?

The only versions which are out are 1.0, 1.5, 1.51, 1.52 and 2.0. When you get your PSP (in the UK) it should be a 1.0, although I'm told they will start to sell 1.52 consoles now. You'll get a warning paper in your box telling you that you MUST upgrade to play the PSP. Of course this is piddle, and is possibly Sony's way of getting people to upgrade before they find out about "Homebrew".

1.5 or below seems to be the best idea to have if you want to play Homebrew games, or even those retro games with the emulators. The only drawback of this, is that you will not get the web browser, which shouldnt really kill you.

When you get your PSP, youll have a Demo Disc included in the pack, this has the upgrade to 2.0 if you wish to upgrade, however, you will need a full battery and the mains charger plugged into it and will take a couple of minutes. If you are after the 1.5 upgrade, you could possibly get it online at some webpages to download, and you can also find it on some games (my Metal Gear Acid has it).

If you have upgraded to 2.0 and youre kicking yourself about wanting to play some old games, you could either tamper with the PSP and take it back to the shop saying its faulty (silly), or wait until the downgrader comes out. Another option would be to wait until 2.0 is cracked and you can play all the stuff on your 2.0

Which Games Should I Get?

Personally, I dont think thats a question you should be asking on a forum. This place is full of people with different opinions. You may favour driving games to fighting or puzzle, or another way around. Theres quite a few games out now for the PSP. If you are unsure, im sure some PSP booths will be opening soon (if they already havent) in shops such as HMV and Virgin so you can have a quick shot of them. Or if theyre not that much to make, Sony could release an "Official PSP Magazine" with the demo UMD disc to have a peek or even a test at some games. We'll see what happens, but go for what you think will be good.

I Got My PSP From Some Small Chinese Town Off An Old Man, Will I Die?

If you got bitten from a mosquito, then probably. As long as you can get an adapter or one of those universal adapters to work in our 3-prong plug socket, youll be fine, the only problem would be UMD movies, I think they have set regions, so unless you like some kung-fu movies, youre buggered. However, the games are universal, and even if you get the new Japanese dodgeball game out, and import it over, youll still be able to play, as long as you know which options to pick to start the game!

How Can I Put Stuff Onto Memory Card?

There are a couple ways to do this, the USB Lead or the Memory Card Reader.

The USB wire couldnt be any harder than boiling an egg. Make sure you have a USB wire which fits. I have one for a Nokia N-Gage, my mate has one from his brothers Motorola V3 Razer phone, and you can also use the same wires from most digital cameras. Simply plug it into your computer, access USB mode on your PSP and thats you. If its your first time pluggin it in, it will say at the bottom in a message bubble "Found new hardware: PSP Type A" (or B, AB or O, depends on your type I guess) on your desktop. If an installation box comes up, keep hitting Next and it will install, and will tell you in another message bubble that youve installed it. Next, go into My Computer, and it will come up as a Removable Disk, much like the USB sticks you use (if you have one). Double click it and thats you!

The memory card way is just as easy. Providing you have a suitable memory card reader, plug the card in, and it should come up the same as the USB, if its the first time, install it, after that, its in My Computer as a Removable Disk.

How Do You Play Your PSP Online?

To play a PSP online, you need a wireless router. Im not completely familiar with the whole wireless thing. As much as im told, go into Infrastructure, and connect. Ive tried it before, standing out side someones house and stealing their bandwidth Twisted Evil It worked for me, so it should work for you too. You can access the net and play games online. If youre looking for a good way to play people abroad, i recommend Xlink Kai: Evolution VII. You can also use your PS2 and Xbox on this if theyre connected.

Where Can I Get A Big Memory Card For A Small Price?

Memory cards are everywhere! Try photo shops, supermarkets, even phone shops (my phone has an MMC slot, so its understandable). The common card everyone is after is of course, the big 1GB card, this can store music, games, and videos on, as well as your game saves. Of course, the bigger the size in the card, the higher the price, so expect to pay a fair amount for them. Most places sell Gigabyte sized cards for about £79.99 ($144), and reported sites of 2Gig cards at £125 ($225). If youre short on cash, or you feel its ridiculous to pay for that (I paid £80 for a 128Mb Duo stick when they were first released) You can try eBay. With some good searching, you may find some good deals

Whats with yourpsp.com Taking Forever To Send Me Stuff?

When you get your PSP, it tells you to register with yourpsp.com and they will send you some free shizzle in the mail. It should take around 28 days, so if you registered on release date, expect a month or so until you get it. Also take into consideration, you arent the only person to register with them, they will have another 100,000 or so people registering too, so if it takes that bit longer, you cant complain. Im guessing they go on a first come, first serve basis. Just wait it out, dont worry, im waiting too.

I Got Some Pixels On My PSP That Don't Work!!

Don't worry, its not just yours. Of course you get the first edition, theres gonna be problems. The pixels are black, it doesn't necessarily mean theyre "dead" but could more be "stuck". Ive made a video which lasts a couple minutes with a charming song with Trivium on it for company, which goes through the colours which could "unstick" them, apparently, it can take a couple hours, so I'm going to be making a longer version, if people are interested, let me know, ill throw a link to it up here, compressed already of course!

I Want To Put Music On My PSP

Easy, i've already covered this in the past, if you want to read up on it, check here.

---

I Want To Put Video On My PSP

It couldnt be any easier. I'll assume you have a video on your computer already (If not, and you need help getting a video from the net, DVD or camera, discuss it in the Movies, Music, Media and Software section.

If you download a program called PSP Video 9 which will do all the work for you, you add the movie file into it, and it will create it into an MP4 for you, and with the generousity, will make it widescreen for your PSP viewing needs!

The video will be created in its directory file under MP_ROOT (C:\Program Filess\pspvideo9\MP_ROOT is where you will find it, unless you install the programs into a seperate folder). Access MP_ROOT, the folder in your PSP memory card, it may be in the root directory (as soon as you open the memory card), or you may have to go into a folder called PSP. Inside MP_ROOT, youll find 2 folders, 100ANV01 and 100MNV01, you want to go into 100MNV01 and place the video there. Access the Video menu from the PSP and you're video should be there

I've Just Downloaded A Game Off The Net, How Do I Put It On?

I'm not being stingy when I say "I'm not telling you". Questions and stuff relating to this is against the forum rules, and should not be discussed here. If you wish to participate in some illegal activity, then be my guest, but if youre seeking help in doing so, this isn't the place to come.

My Battery Lasts 6-7 Hours, And Thats Not Good Enough

The only way you can get round this is to take your charger with you. Asda are selling a Mad Catz battery pack for £14.99, it comes with a bigger battery. It is bigger in size, but it has double the battery power of the Sony battery, so you get longer gaming. It also comes with a sweet USB cable, which doubles up as a USB PSP charger. If youre needy, I would suggest there (of course, me working there has nothing to do with me suggesting Asda )

Should I Get A Screen Protector?

You could if you so desire, personally I think theyre a waste of money, as people have had complaints about bubbles coming up over the screen, or not being able to see the screen properly. Think about it, if you pay nearly £200 for a handheld, do you really want to throw it about so the screen gets messed up?

---

Why Are You Doing This?

Well, of course, people are getting a PSP all the time, and they buy it, and they get it home, and they wanna see what else they can do, or see what other people think. People sign up to this place and post a question, it gets answered. Two days later, someone else does the same, with the same question and everything. Eventually, we get bored of answering the same question over and over again, and it can get a bit over the top when we have so many topics on it, and other people dont bother to search. Were not saying youre lazy, just search once in a while and youll find out some new stuff

---

I think Ive got most questions answered here, if theres any ive missed, let me know, ill add them on
